Richard M. Roberts
Ladieees and Gentlemen...
In a bluster of showmanship reminiscent of P.T. Barnum, Richard M. Roberts bills himself as “The World’s Tallest Film Historian” (and at 6’7” who’s going to argue!?).
Whether introducing new audiences to Cuba’s first deaf/mute silent film comedian (who also happens to be actor Cesar Romero’s cousin) or to the comic stylings of such obscure clowns as Poodles Hanaford, Mr. Roberts engages audiences across the country with his irreverent, informative and often hilarious anecdotes on early film comedians.
In addition to his appearances at various film conventions across the country where he showcases some of the gems from his private collection, he has worked with major archives assisting them in identifying rare film fragments.
His contributions to film history thus far also includes his work as co-author and contributor to the 30-episode “Slap Happy” television series, a definitive collection highlighting the work of various silent comedians, many whose efforts have never been shown to more than a handful of die-hard enthusiasts.
Mr. Roberts is currently at work on an upcoming book on the short films of Hal Roach.
